What is Tau Alpha Chi?

Tau Alpha Chi is a professional organization established to promote scholastic and professional excellence in the field of taxation. Founded in 1983 at Georgia State University, Tau Alpha Chi has initiated almost 1000 members, currently averaging 50 active members per quarter. Tau Alpha Chi membership is open to undergraduate, graduate, and law students with a common interest -- the area of taxation. And, now Tau Alpha Chi is expanding to university campuses nationwide to offer greater opportunities to students interested in taxation.

What Are Tau Alpha Chi's Goals and Objectives?

The constitutionally defined objectives of Tau Alpha Chi are:

  • To encourage and give recognition to scholastic and professional excellence in the field of taxation
  • To provide opportunities for association among members and professionals in the area of taxation.
  • To cultivate a sense of responsibility and service with its members.
  • To foster high moral and ethical standards among membership.
  • To encourage professional development.
  • To promote better understanding and knowledge of national, international, state, and local taxation.

Long-range objectives include student manuscript contests, national meetings, newsletters, and other chapter features intended to increase interest and participation.

Why a Professional Tax Fraternity?

Tau Alpha Chi provides a unique opportunity for accounting students with a specialty interest in the area of taxation. At Georgia State University, Tau Alpha Chi complements other accounting fraternities and extends the program opportunities to meet the needs of business students.

How Do Members Benefit?

Students find that Tau Alpha Chi significantly enhances the classroom educational process. Experienced professionals, IRS commissioners, Tax Court judges, CPA firm partners, and other experienced professionals speak at Tau Alpha Chi membership meetings on current tax topics. Support by the university and local businesses has continually provided students with the benefit of highlighting their interest and academic pursuit while facilitating the candidate selection process.

Tau Alpha Chi provides a forum for social interaction and networking with individuals who recruit in the field, not only in the local market but nationally.

What is CPTx?

In 2003, Tau Alpha Chi accepted the role of governing the CPTx (Certified Practitioner of Taxation) designationand presently oversees the continuing professional education requirement of the CPTx designation. Tau Alpha Chi remains committed to growing the number of chapters and also to providing a recognizable designation that reflects the CPTx holder's proficiency in the area of taxation. Tau Alpha Chi members who achieve a post graduate degree with a concentration in tax and has less than one year of practical experience in taxation  are offered a provisional membership.
